Interwar Period Essay

The Interwar period was a lapse of time that started with the end of World War I and finalized with the beginning of World War II. This period of time lasted from 1919 to 1939. Many countries, mostly from Europe, were enormously affected negatively in their economies, societies, politics and militarisms. After World War I, many countries were in deplorable conditions; they had lost all of their economy for the support their armies in World War I. Also, their politics were in chaos because some countries introduced a new government. These actions created a total chaos inside the society, the people was divided into many groups in order to defend their beliefs of a perfect government.

The Interwar period had enormous consequences upon many countries such as Germany, France, the United States, and the United Kingdom. For example, Germany had lost all of its economy during the World War I, it spent huge quantities of money to help its army. Then, with the end of the World War I, the Treaty of Versailles and the League of Nations were created. The Treaty of Versailles stated that Germany was the country that caused the World War I, and that they had to pay war reparations to France for all the destruction that it created. Also, the Treaty of Versailles forced Germany to reduce its army to a 100,000 men and remove its aircraft. All these actions made Germany’s people to feel oppressed and down because they were the ones who were paying the real consequences. Germany wasn’t the only country that was having trouble after the World War I. France had a lot of economic problems as well as the United Kingdom. The United States wasn’t affected at all, its hell started when the Great Depression emerged in 1929. Many American investors saw that it was a good moment to capitalize in Germany. The United States was helping Germany with its reparations to France. The American investors founded banks, factories, schools, etc. to help Germany’s economy… until the stock market crashed on October 29, 1929 (also known as the Black Tuesday.) During the Great Depression, Italy, UK, Germany, and the U.S. were terribly affected. The rate of unemployment was incredibly high, the United States had unemployment of 60.7%, France had 21.4%, UK 12.9%, and Germany 23.2%.

Later on, a German leader named Adolph Hitler saw the perfect opportunity to ascend into power. Hitler promised the Germans to get them out of the Great Depression, many Germans followed him. He joined the Nazi Party and became Chancellor of Germany in 1933. On March 23, 1933 Hitler became the dictator of Germany and introduced a totalitarian government. Moving on, the United States was in total chaos, therefore the ex-president Herbert Hoover was removed from the charged and the ex-president Franklin D. Roosevelt was brought by a political realignment in 1932. Roosevelt imposed the “First New Deal” and the “Second New Deal” in 1935 which helped the economy a lot and gave a strong stimulus to the growth of labor unions. Furthermore, France had lost territory and had an awful economy. Many strikes began because of the crisis and hunger. On 1926, under the government of the French premier Poincaré, France recovered from the economic crisis. Poincaré levied new taxes on sales, and the bureaucracy was cut. This caused the budget to be balanced, the franc to be even 30% more valuable. Poincaré was then considered a national hero for his actions. The United Kingdom, in an effort to balance the budget and restore confidence in the pound, on 10 September 1931 with Phillip Snowden still as Chancellor, the new national government issued an emergency budget, which immediately instituted a round of draconian cuts in public spending and wages. Public sector wages and unemployment pay were cut by 10%, and income tax was raised. The pay cuts did not go down well however and resulted in a Mutiny in the Royal Navy.

After reviewing all the most important aspects of the leaders: Adolph Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Benito Mussolini, Mao Zedong and Francisco Franco. I came with the conclusion that the most relevant leader was Adolph Hitler. If I had to put him in another country rather than Germany I would put him in the United States.

Hitler was one of the most important leaders in the whole world. He had extremely efficient tactics to introduce his plans. For example, he used propaganda that persuaded people to join the Nazi Party. Another example could be the Nazi Youth, by 1930 the organization had enlisted more than 25,000 boys aged 14 and upwards. In those times, the society of the United States was divided and could be easily manipulated. Hitler had a great advantage, he was really good in presenting speeches. Therefore, he could have used that advantage to persuade the U.S. citizens to follow him. I think Hitler wouldn’t have any difficulty in imposing his rules. He had the idea of a supreme race named the Aryans. He said that the Aryan race was supposed to rule the world and eliminate inferior races such as the Jews, blacks, gypsies, homosexuals, etc. One thing that could have helped Hitler in his way to dominate the U.S. was that in those times, the United States was extremely racist. So, many people would have agreed with Hitler’s ideas of a dominant race. All these factors would help Hitler a lot in his way to conquer the United States. I think that if he was born in the U.S. he could have done all the actions he did in Germany.

For the last two classes we were assigned to make a presentation in a program named Prezi. The presentation was about our next five years of life and we had to represent our goals using Prezi techniques, such as the path, images, lines, etc. At the end, I really liked Prezi because it is far better than the normal PowerPoint. I really liked that we could move the screen, zoom in and out, include shapes & lines, and even create a path for a chronological presentation! It is really simple to use. Also, a Prezi is more interesting than a PowerPoint because you can create your own personal way to present it instead of just slide after slide. I think Prezi is a revolutionary program that will help everyone to make a %1000 better presentation.
Prezi resulted very easy to work with it because in the beginning they offer a tutorial video to know what Prezi is and how its functions work. After that I just needed to get used to it and then I totally understood. I think that the hardest thing that I tried to do was to put a number into another one and repeat that action for at least three more times. Unfortunately
, there wasn't enough zoom for all those actions, so I had to change my idea. If I get the option to work with Prezi or PowerPoint I wouldn't know what I would choose because both have good qualities and bad qualities. For example, I always have had a difficulty to get good ideas for
presentations and stuff like that, so when I try to create a Prezi is more complicated than a simple PowerPoint. The PowerPoint already has the simple format of slide by slide, so that always help me to get organized and develop my ideas. In conclusion I really wouldn't know what program I would choose because both have their own pros and cons.

The Next Five Years of my Life

Public Service Announcement

For this time we had to make a PSA (Public Service Announcement) in teams of 2-3 students per each. The PSA must had a duration between 1:00 and 1:30. My team got the topic of Internet Safety. At first, we watched some videos about this theme to get an idea of what was it about. It wasn't an easy topic so we spent many time planning the "commercial" and then the ideas started to come out. Then, we initiated filming the PSA, it starts with Eduardo offering Rodrigo an iPad through the internet. After that, in the same scene Rodrigo accepts and gives Eduardo his personal information. Now, in the next scene, Eduardo has Rodrigo's Facebook and reads all his posts and finds out that his parents are away for a few days. Finally, in the last scene Eduardo visits Rodrigo and kidnaps him. That's practically all our commercial and the message is to never give personal information to any person through the internet.

Truly, I don't think our PSA needs a lot of changes, I think it is pretty good. The there are just a few things I would like to change. For example, the way we spent our time because we didn't use our time wisely, but at the end it is a good PSA. Another thing I would change is that they speak louder so it would be more understandable for the audience.

Honestly, I have a hard time choosing what video is the best, there are a few videos that are really good and others that are pretty bad. One of the videos that I liked was the Taku's and Jorge's video. It has a very poor quality but that was a minor problem, I emphasized my attention in the PSA's message, and actually their video gives a lot of helpful information about the marijuana. The other video I liked was the Raul's and Mahonry's PSA, it is about safe sex and it is very good. The PSA is based in a very common but informative problem and that's what I liked it. So, my three options for the best PSA are: My team's video about Internet Security, Jorge's and Taku, and Raul's & Mahonry's.

Public Service Announcement

Well, in my opinion a Public Service Announcement is a type of advertisement in which tips or common problems are presented and make people get interest in a certain product. They also show the solution of that problem, and that makes the product even more curious. A PSA is different from a commercial in many ways. For example, a commercial creates a problem and then introduce just one product as the solution of the problem, making it appear more important. A PSA focuses in the interest of the population and as I said before, it bases its advertisements basing in common problems in society.

I would like to work with... Rodrigo. I decided to work with him during this project because he's a great friend of mine, he can work easily without struggling and we usually end up with a great idea and therefore an excellent result. Also I would be pleased to work with Taku because he is very creative, we can come up with really nice ideas and he has a great enthusiasm for these kind or projects. Lastly, I would like to work with Jorge because he is very dedicated to school projects, he can get nice ideas based in any topic and he has a great ability with computers and that would help us while we're editing our commercial.
  • The use of drugs
  • Having sex without prevention
  • Driving under the abuse of alcohol
  • Help to raise the self-esteem
  • Having a healthy life
Probably, I would choose the next three ideas: The use of drugs, Driving under the abuse of alcohol, and Having sex without prevention. For the PSA of The use of drugs I would put a guy who is devastated by the use of these mortal substances and then he enters into a rehabilitation and then comes out clean and ready to start a new and healthy life staying away from drugs.

Super Bowl Commercials

For this time, we had to choose the three Super Bowl Commercials we liked the most and explain why they are so great. So, my three favorite adds were the Brisk Eminem, the Budweiser Wild West, and the Volkswagen commercials. First, I liked a lot the Brisk Eminem commercial because everything is made out of clay, which makes it awesome. Other thing that I liked too was that the stage is moving like if it were a cube and the Eminem made out of clay is constantly moving into every side. Also, Eminem starts saying why he never does commercials, but at the same time he's making one and that's kind of ironic. The second commercial is about the beer Budweiser in the Wild West, the "bad guy" is coming into a bar for a budweiser and everyone in town is scared, but at the same time another man with the beers is coming. The "bad guy" gets into the bar and asks for a budweiser and the bartender says that he doesn't have any left, then the "beer man" arrives and gives the guy a beer. At the end, the "bad guy" starts singing the song "Tiny Dancer" and everyone follows him. The third commercial is from Volkswagen and it consists in a kid who is a fan of Darth Vader and is trying to get the same power as Darth Vader. He tries everywhere but he can't get it right, then his dad arrives and the kid tries to use his "power" in his dad's car. His dad is watching him from the house and turns on the engine to fool the kid and make him feel that he actually has the power.

I think I would change some parts of the Brisk Eminem commercial, it is very good and I liked it a lot so I don't know if I'm able to make it better. To improve the commercial I would make that Eminem raps while he's moving through the stage instead of saying why he doesn't make any commercials. Also, he could rap about the product named Brisk and why he likes it. Another thing he could do is to rap something about his life, for example any experience during his time being a rapper.

The commercial from the classmate I liked the most was the Jorge's add about Coca-Cola. He based his commercial in the training scenes of Rocky Balboa from the movie "Rocky IV". He also included the original song from those scenes which makes his commercial even better. This commercial is very hilarious because watching Jorge training and making that kind of stuff is really funny. It is also funny that he is promoting coke for sport, but fortunately everyone knows that that's not true. All this things he did show why I liked his commercial.
